The Essex accent

What an Essex Accent Sounds Like

The Essex accent most people recognise is a close relative of Cockney. It spread through the county during the twentieth century as families moved out from East London to towns such as Basildon, Harlow and Southend. You can hear the link in the sounds: a t in the middle or at the end of a word often drops to a catch in the throat, so water becomes wa’er, and an l at the end of a word softens towards a w, so milk moves towards miwk.

The lighter, more widespread version is known as Estuary English, after the Thames Estuary. It is heard across Essex, Kent and much of the South East. The north of the county and its villages traditionally sounded different again, closer to the accents of Suffolk and East Anglia.

Why cast an Essex voice

Why Brands Cast Essex Voices

An Essex voice is upbeat, sociable and quick. Reality television made it one of the most recognised accents in Britain, and it is a regular request for retail, beauty, fashion, motoring and entertainment briefs, and for comedy.

A lighter Estuary read does a different job. It is an everyday voice of the South East, so it suits a script that should sound like a real customer or colleague talking.

Tell us which Essex

Light Estuary and broad Essex are different briefs. Say which you want, or send a reference, and we will cast to it.

What We Cast Essex Voices For

Advertising

Commercials & Brand

Radio, TV and online spots for retail, beauty, fashion, motoring and entertainment, where the voice needs energy and a smile in it.

Corporate

Corporate & Explainers

Explainer videos, customer-facing films and training content that should sound approachable and familiar to audiences in London and the South East.

Broadcast & Character

Comedy, Drama & Games

Character voices for animation, audio drama, comedy and video games, from a light Estuary colour to a full Essex performance.

Accent strength

How Strong Should the Accent Be?

Broad Essex is a favourite for comedy, and it is easy to overdo. Tell us where you want it to sit. A light Estuary accent sounds natural and current on a national campaign. A full Essex read suits comedy, character parts and scripts set in the county.

If you are not sure, send the script and a reference you like. We will shortlist voices at more than one strength so you can hear the difference before you choose.

Tell us in the brief

Estuary or full Essex. Light, medium or strong. Male or female. Age range. A reference voice or advert if you have one.

How to brief us

What we need to get you a shortlist

Send us your script, tone reference and deadline. We will come back with a focused shortlist of Essex voices and their availability.

  • Script length and target audience
  • Tone: bright, warm, cheeky, conversational
  • Accent: Estuary or full Essex, and how strong
  • Male or female, and age range
  • Media, usage term and deadline

FAQs

Essex voiceover, FAQs

They are closely related and they are not the same. Cockney belongs to East London. The modern Essex accent grew out of it as Londoners moved into the county, and it has become its own sound. If your script is set in the East End, see our Cockney voiceover page.

It is the name for the accent heard around the Thames Estuary and across much of the South East. It sits between Cockney and standard southern English, and it is the lighter end of what most people call an Essex accent.

Essex accent dubbing and ADR session at Easy Tiger Voices

Dubbing & ADR

Essex accent dubbing and ADR

We cast and record dubbing across the sync levels a project needs, from rough-sync and time-sync through to full lip-sync, plus ADR and voice replacement, for film, TV, streaming, games and corporate content.

Casting matters as much in a dub as in an original read. An audience hears a mismatched voice immediately, so we match Essex voices to the on-screen performance, not just the script.

See the full service on our dubbing and ADR page, or read our guide to the difference between dubbing and voice over.
