What a Geordie Accent Sounds Like

Geordie is the accent and dialect of Newcastle upon Tyne and Tyneside. It is one of the most recognisable voices in Britain: musical, with a lift at the end of phrases, and with vowels of its own. Town is pronounced toon, which is where the city’s nickname for its football club comes from.

It also keeps a vocabulary that the rest of England has lost or never had. Wor means our, gan means go, canny means good or pleasant, and a bairn is a child. A broad Geordie speaker uses these freely. A lighter Newcastle accent keeps the melody and drops most of the dialect words.
