Why native matters

Native Japanese voices, every time

Japanese is one of the most precise voiceover languages we work with. The polite registers, the gap between spoken and written forms, the way intonation carries gender and age signals, all of it is obvious to a native listener and almost impossible for a non-native speaker to fake. Every voice on our Japanese roster is a first-language speaker with professional voiceover experience and a broadcast-quality studio. For any audience-facing Japanese voiceover, casting a true native is non-negotiable.

Why a Japanese voice

Why Japanese casting is different

Japanese does not tolerate a rough approximation. Politeness level, pitch and delivery style carry meaning in their own right, and a listener registers a mismatch instantly. Our talent covers commercial reads for major Japanese brands, corporate and e-learning narration for multinationals localising into Japan, anime and game dubbing for studios shipping into the Japanese market, and long-form documentary and audiobook narration. Most are trained either in Tokyo broadcast schools or through professional voice acting (seiyuu) studios.

Register & politeness

Teineigo (polite form) and keigo (honorific) are not stylistic choices, they are structural. Corporate, customer-facing and institutional scripts need the correct level, and a native reader will flag it before the session if the translation gets it wrong.

Seiyuu tradition

Japan has a professional voice acting industry with its own training route and vocal archetypes. For anime, games and animation you need a trained seiyuu, not a corporate narrator attempting a character voice.

Script adaptation

Raw translation rarely reads well aloud in Japanese. Where a script needs reworking from English into idiomatic Japanese, we partner with experienced J-localisation writers rather than recording a literal translation.

The full spectrum

Japanese accents & registers we cast

For almost all commercial and broadcast work the default is hyojungo, the Tokyo-based standard taught in schools and used by national broadcasters such as NHK. Regional variation comes into play for character work and creative briefs, and Japanese voice work has a strong tradition of distinct vocal archetypes from the seiyuu industry. Here is how we think about casting it.

Tokyo standard (Hyojungo)

The standard used by national news, broadcast and most commercials. Neutral, authoritative and instantly understood across Japan. The safe choice for national advertising, corporate narration, e-learning and explainer video.

Kansai-ben (Osaka-Kyoto)

A distinct musicality and a warmer, more down-to-earth feel. Widely used in Japan for comedic, friendly and character-led roles in advertising and animation. A clear creative choice when the brief wants personality over polish.

Hakata-ben (Kyushu)

The Fukuoka accent, softer and quicker than Tokyo standard. Placeable and genuine for regional campaigns, character work and content aimed at the Kyushu market.

Tohoku & northern dialects

Northern Japanese accents with their own vowel colour and cadence. Used where a brief calls for a specific regional identity, or for period, rural and factual content.

Seiyuu performance

High-energy character delivery, anime-style performance and naturalistic dubbing reads. Trained specialists across anime, video games, animation, dubbed live action and trailer work.

Keigo & corporate register

Honorific and humble forms for AGM video, investor materials, customer service and institutional content. Cast for readers who handle the formal register naturally rather than stiffly.

FAQs

Japanese voiceover, FAQs

Always a native speaker. Japanese politeness levels, intonation patterns and the gap between written and spoken forms are extremely difficult for a non-native to deliver convincingly. For any audience-facing work, advertising, dubbing or broadcast, casting a native is non-negotiable. Every voice on our Japanese roster is a first-language native speaker.

Rates depend on script length, usage and talent profile. A standard corporate or e-learning Japanese read typically starts around £400 to £700. A broadcast TV commercial with Japan-market usage is quoted on a buyout basis aligned to industry rate cards. Send your script and media plan and we will come back with a fixed quote the same working day.

Most corporate, e-learning and digital projects deliver within 24 to 48 hours of brief approval. Same-day rushes are possible when talent and studio are available. Longer projects, such as game localisation or audiobooks, are scheduled across a production window agreed upfront.

Yes. Most commercial and corporate work is delivered in Tokyo-standard hyojungo. We also have artists who can authentically deliver Kansai-ben and other regional accents where the brief calls for it, and seiyuu-trained talent for anime, games and animation character work.

Both work. We can handle Japanese translation and copy adaptation as part of the project through trusted J-localisation writers, or we can record from an already-translated script approved by your in-market team. The voice artist will always review the script for naturalness before the session.

Corporate, internal communications and e-learning work is licensed in perpetuity for the agreed use. Advertising and broadcast work is quoted with explicit usage covering territory, media and duration, in line with UK and international voiceover rate cards. Game and anime dubbing usage is agreed in line with studio standards. Usage is always made explicit upfront.

Yes. Send us the script and we will come back with a shortlist of custom-voiced auditions, usually three voices, recorded against your actual script, within 24 hours. No charge, no commitment.
