Why this voice

A different language, not a Mandarin variant

Cantonese and Mandarin share a writing system but are mutually unintelligible spoken languages. For audiences in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong and the global Cantonese diaspora, a Mandarin voiceover is a wrong-language casting choice, not just the wrong accent. Native Cantonese is the only commercially credible option.

It matters for advertising in Hong Kong, where Cantonese is the broadcast standard, and for any campaign aimed at the substantial Cantonese-speaking populations in the UK, Canada, Australia and the US. Treat it as a separate language and budget accordingly.

The spectrum

Cantonese registers we cast

Cantonese is largely uniform across Hong Kong and Guangdong, but register and modernity vary. The right register tells the audience who the brand is talking to.

Hong Kong Cantonese

The international standard for commercial Cantonese. Polished, modern, broadcast-ready. The default for advertising, finance and corporate content in HK and the global diaspora.

Guangzhou / Guangdong

Mainland Cantonese. Slightly different vocabulary and intonation, useful when the campaign is specifically aimed at Guangdong province rather than HK.

Traditional / Formal Cantonese

More formal register, used for legal, government, banking and educational content where authority is paramount.

Modern / Youth Cantonese

Conversational, fast-paced, current. The right register for lifestyle, tech, gaming and Gen-Z facing brand work in HK.

FAQs

Common questions about Cantonese voiceover

No. Cantonese and Mandarin are mutually unintelligible languages. They share Chinese characters in writing but a Cantonese audience cannot understand a Mandarin voiceover. They need separate casts.

Hong Kong and Macau use Traditional characters. Mainland Guangdong uses Simplified. Confirm with your localisation team before sending the script.

Some are bilingual, but they are not the same skill. Confirm at brief stage if you need both – we usually recommend native casts per language.

Yes. Several of our Cantonese voices are based in the UK and deliver natural register for UK Chinese-language broadcasting and brand campaigns.

24 to 48 hours standard. Same-day possible during London or HK business hours.

Cantonese dubbing and ADR session at Easy Tiger Voices

Dubbing & ADR

Cantonese dubbing and ADR

We cast and record Cantonese dubbing across the sync levels a project needs, from rough-sync and time-sync through to full lip-sync, plus ADR and voice replacement, for film, TV, streaming, games and corporate content.

Casting matters as much in a dub as in an original read. An audience hears a mismatched voice immediately, so we match native Cantonese voices to the on-screen performance, not just the script.

See the full service on our dubbing and ADR page, or read our guide to the difference between dubbing and voice over.
