Ten million speakers, distinct identity, separate language

Catalan is spoken by around 10 million people across Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Andorra and parts of southern France and Sardinia. It is not a Spanish dialect – it is a separate Romance language closer to Occitan than to Castilian. No. Catalan is a separate Romance language, closer to Occitan than to Castilian Spanish. Catalan-speaking audiences identify it as their own language and react to it accordingly.
